U.S.-Based Employment Opportunities

LATIN AMERICA RESEARCH FELLOW

Position Type: The duration of the fellowship is for six months. The position is part-time and unpaid, but a modest travel stipend will be provided should international travel be needed.

Reports to: Director of Research and Strategy

Overview of Love Justice and Our Anti-Trafficking Strategy: Love Justice International (LJI) is a Christian anti-trafficking NGO that has worked in Nepal since 2004. In the past few years, we have expanded to Bangladesh, India, and South Africa. We use a counter-trafficking strategy called transit monitoring, where our trained staff monitors transit areas (borders, bus stations, and airports) to identify potential trafficking victims and assists them with repatriation and procuring aftercare. In interviewing the victims, we collect intelligence to assist local police with criminal investigations and arrests of the perpetrators. We also follow up with each legal case filed to ensure speedy and fair prosecutions.

Through this strategy, we stop trafficking before victims reach the destination where they are exploited, and we are able to collect intelligence to go after criminal networks. We partner with local churches in all of our work. We have intercepted and assisted over 16,000 individuals who were being trafficked or at high-risk of being trafficked, and we have helped convict 69 traffickers.

LJI is planning to expand its transit monitoring operations to new countries. We are currently running five pilot projects in Africa and two pilot projects in Asia, and we are interested in doing feasibility studies in Latin America to gauge the potential of transit monitoring in that region.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Fellow would be integral to LJI’s expansion process by helping to lay the groundwork for establishing new fields through remote research and interviews. This entails the following:

  • Conducting a literature review of publicly available reports and research on human trafficking and other socio-political conditions in a specific country;

  • Identifying relevant stakeholders and potential partners in the specific country, such as NGOs, church leaders, and government officials, and setting up remote informational interviews with them;

  • Making initial assessments about the feasibility of implementing transit monitoring in that country, including victim-identification protocol, monitoring locations, security, law enforcement, ease of NGO operations, and other factors;

  • Writing a country report summarizing findings and assessments.

Depending on the results of the research, there may be opportunities for the Fellow to travel internationally to meet with stakeholders and conduct further feasibility studies.

Qualifications: The candidate must be fluent in the Spanish language, including speaking, reading, and writing. The candidate should possess strong research, writing, and verbal communication skills. The candidate should be detail oriented, organized, and an independent thinker with the   initiative to conduct self-directed research. A graduate degree is strongly preferred. The candidate should be an effective networker with key stakeholders to represent LJI’s anti-trafficking work and ministry and to effectively communicate with others in cross-cultural contexts. Finally, the candidate should be a mature Christian who is passionate about justice and advocacy for poor and vulnerable populations.

ANTI-TRAFFICKING FIELD LIAISON

Position Type: Support-Raised, Overseas

Reports to: Regional Anti-Trafficking Director

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: To ensure excellence among our 11 anti-human trafficking fields in Asia and Africa, Love Justice uses a number of "core processes." For example, we use a questioning protocol to identify trafficking victims and a Victim Interview Form to collect information about each victim. We also use Searchlight (our human trafficking data entry portal), and we have developed a Case Information Form to collect crucial data about each trafficking case. We also implement a transit monitoring standard, which is our guidebook for how to do transit monitoring. We have 27 such processes connected to our anti-trafficking work which we intend for each field to implement. Our model is to choose the right local partners and put a lot of trust in them to coordinate their projects day-to-day, with our role being largely to assist them in the adaptation and installation of these processes. Anti-Trafficking Field Liaisons will choose a number of these processes to "specialize" in, and they will assist local fields in adapting them, under the guidance of the relevant regional anti-trafficking directors.

Work Environment and Requirements: This position will be based in Asia and could involve travel all over the world. Eventually, we will want one or more Anti-Trafficking Field Liaisons to be based in South Africa.

Business experience, including familiarity with complex spreadsheets would be very helpful.  All candidates should be mature Christians who are passionate about justice, self-motivated, diligent, problem-solvers, faithful, and willing to adapt to a variety of difficult contexts. A minimum of a bachelor's or masters degree in a relevant field is required.
